  • Duration

  • WORK & TRAVEL USA allows you to work anywhere in the US during your summer vacation between June 1st and September 30th for a maximum duration of 4 months. If your classes end before June 1st and you wish to leave earlier, please provide us with a letter from your university stating your class end date.

  • You can arrive in the United States up to 5 days prior to the beginning of your employment. You are also allowed to extend your stay as a tourist for 30 additional days after your last day of employment (your DS-2019 end date). You can not work during this period and you must purchase this travel period before you begin your WAT program. If you do not purchase this travel period, you will not be covered by insurance following your DS end date. it is against program regulations to be in the country without health insurance!

If you travel out of the U.S. during this period you will not be able to re-enter, so please use this period for domestic travel only.

The duration of your stay in the US can therefore go beyond your DS dates in the limit of 35 days total (pre and post training).

Please note that your insurance dates must cover your entire stay including your eventual travel dates.

  • Location

You can work in the city of your choice throughout the United States, including Hawaii, Alaska, US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

    Budget in the USA

Your day-to-day expenses in the US (housing, food, transportation, etc.) must be completely covered by your salary and/or your own personal funds.

The American authorities require that you arrive with a minimum of $800 (eight hundred US dollars) if you have a pre-arranged job OR show proof of resources for a minimum of $1200 (one thousand two hundred US dollars) if you arrive without a job.

Please pay attention to the way you will finance your stay, keeping in mind that you will often receive your first paycheck after two weeks of employment.

There is no limit on the number of participations in the program "Summer Work and Travel". You must qualify for the program by being currently enrolled in an institution of post-secondary education or by being a recent graduate.

Foreign residents in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg or the UK

European Union nationals residing in France or in the UK can present their application to the American Consulate in Paris or London without any inconvenience.

We strongly recommend that participants from countries outside the European Union apply for their visa in their country of origin. There is indeed a risk for non-European Union nationals to have their visa refused by the American Consulate.

Non-EU nationals who decide to apply in Paris or London will have to prove their ties to France or the UK by providing documents such as: temporary or permanent residence permit, rent receipts, bills, letter from the university certifying future enrolment following the US internship, employment contract, payslips, bank references, any other personal reference, return plane ticket to the country of residence or origin.

Your passport must be valid six months after the end date of your summer job. You must also provide a letter from the local immigration authorities confirming that your residence permit will be renewed once you return to France or to the UK.

The US consulate in Bern, Switzerland requires all foreign nationals (with the exception of EU residents) to apply from their country of origin. Applicants residing in Switzerland, Luxembourg or Belgium should check the requirements of their local US consulate.
